This evening at Victoria University’s premier event of its ‘GameChanger Series’ I was thrilled to emcee a panel with 5 amazing women speaking to ‘What gender equity means to them’.
Using images that conveyed how they see equality, these women shared personal and political views. It was clear that gains for women are still far from being realised. Collective ideas on practical improvements with targets and quotas in business and government were seen as essential. And equally important was the push for overcoming mindsets and misogynist cultures permeating language, attitude and behaviours of men toward women.
Importantly, acknowledging the reparations due to indigenous women was seen as a critical starting point in achieving meaningful change. This country and its gatekeepers of colonial order need much work ; we’re not there yet.
Was honoured to be in the company of articulate and passionate women in Monique Toohey Psychologist and author, Prof. Pat Drake (STEM Initiatives, Vic Uni), Devon Taylor, ED Women’s Circus, Jayne Lewis, Entrepreneur and Paola Balla, Indigenous Studies Academic and Activist.
They made formidable noise for gender equality and fiercely represented as game changers to watch.
