Full Circle of Social Change

//Full Circle of Social Change

Today I  delivered a guest lecture for the ‘Making Social Change’ unit of the LaTrobe University Masters program in International Development.
As an alumnist of this university and Masters course, it was a come-full-circle moment addressing this class on the encounters I’d had in this field post graduation. These included work with NGO’s, my experience in government and my work via the Consultancy.
I stressed the importance of affording individuals from the community’s we engage with, authentic representation – including the importance of stepping aside to give them the platform instead of speaking on their behalf. And I also touched on the role of social media as a tool for manifesting activism that had the propensity to morph into clicktivism (aka slacktivism).  when investment in a cause resembled token deeds (including hashtag empathy)in lieu of meaningful, systemic change across societal structures.
