Does Art Effect Change?

On Saturday 5th of March the IMA held its inaugural International Islamic Arts Symposium on the topic of 'Does Art Effect Social Change?'. Principally funded by the Council for Arab-Australian Relations (CAAR), this event was two months in the making. Its goal was to showcase the perspective from art practitioners, curators and industry experts on the way their disciplinary field effected social change to wider society. Guest speakers included representatives from the UAE including Mr [...]

Stepping Up to Equality, One Image At a Time

This evening at Victoria University's premier event of its 'GameChanger Series' I was thrilled to emcee a panel with 5 amazing women speaking to 'What gender equity means to them'.  Using images that conveyed how they see equality, these women shared personal and political views. It was clear that gains for women are still far from being realised. Collective ideas on practical improvements with targets and quotas in business and government were seen as essential. [...]

The Space to Be, is here

Emceeing the #Space2be fundraiser tonight was an absolute thrill. The event attracted a massive crowd raising funds in support of this design hub initiative for refugee and migrant entrepreneurship. The event was peppered with highlights including the moment I made the audience cheer and guest speaker Julian BurnsideQC chuckle at the prospect of a future when some of our former PM's are detained at airports because their names are flagged for Crimes Against Humanity .. When Art Imitates Life, in Smiles after Sorrow

I was honoured to emcee an amazing event last night, shining  a light on the issue of acid crimes against women in Pakistan, via a fundraiser for #DepilexSmileagainFoundation. With inspiring words from anti-violence campaigner, Phil Cleary, Masarrat Misbah (cosmetics artist and humanitarian), Sabra - a brave survivor of an horrific acid attack, an auction - then a phenomenal one woman theatrical blitz 'The Empty Room', by Feryal Ghauhar Ali in a mesmerising performance. This one hour [...]

“Bridging the Divide’ forum

This morning on behalf of the Australian Muslim Women's Centre for Human Rights (AMCHR), I welcomed a number of faith and community leaders to a roundtable forum to 'bridge divides' between sectarian groups. And though stakeholder organisations were present to support this initiative, the dialogue and platform belonged to the communities represented. Moments like these give pause to consider how much more effectively we progress as a people when we're spoken to, and not spoken [...]
