Ali’s Wedding Comes Home to Celebrate

Congratulations Osamah Sami for 'Ali's Wedding' premiering last night in his HOME TOWN with the Melbourne International Film Festival. This film told his story with pathos, humour and stirring gentleness. Moreover, it instantly humanised the 'migrant Muslim' without trying, simply by sharing the dimensions of family, love, community and expectations. And what an amazing production team & cast - supported by Jeffrey Walker, Sheila Jayadev, Tony Ayres, Helen Pankhurst, Andrew Knight, Fadia Abboud and superb [...]

Walking the Diversity Talk- kudos to the RWH

Congratulations to the Royal Women's Hospital (RWH) for embracing this marketing strategy of diversity and inclusion !  Representation of your workforce that is authentic, while simultaneously shifting stereotypes, begins with responsible messaging.  And a special shout out to Ms Sumeyye Cetinkiran- am so proud of you for being the face for Melbourne's RWH nurses in 2017!  Be sure to check out this spectacular image on the facade entrance of the Hospital.

Respect Where it Matters

From a recent speaking gig I gave at Salesian College to their upper secondary cohort - on 'The Space In-between'. To the theme of respectful relationships I focused on the role of communication and knowledge of others, understanding difference over tolerance, recognising diversity of experiences - all of which separate respect from disrespect. Thanks to the well being team at this school for promoting initiatives of inclusion. A thoroughly enjoyable opportunity to connect with brilliant [...]

30 Years Of Driving Change & Saving Lives

Cause for huge celebration with the advent of a '30 Years of Women in Ambulance Victoria' Gala Dinner event last week. It is hard to believe that prior to 1987, women were unable to become paramedics due to laws that deemed them not physically capable of undertaking aspects of the workload.  Fast forward 30 years on and we now have over 57% females candidates enrolled in university studying paramedical science - an astonishing recovery. Further, [...]

From Africa to Australia- Capturing Stories

Was thrilled to be a guest on @ozafricantv for Series 2, episode 4 recently. In conversation with the brilliant Dorcas Utkovic, I spoke of my personal background, and how being notably different in appearance as a child growing up in regional Australia, prompted me to question those who required my difference to be 'managed' in later years.  It was an honour to participate in this episode - you can catch OzAfrican TV on Foxtel or [...]

AMWCHR – Report Findings to Mitigate Trauma for Women & Children

Congratulations to the #australianmuslimwomenscentreforhumanrights for the launch of 'Marrying Young' and the 'Out-Of-Home Care' resources, which as Chair of the Board, I had the pleasure of officiating at today's event.  This research signals vital information supporting the need for culturally specific services to resource young women and children towards improved wellbeing, agency and empowerment. Further, community led and community directed programs produced the highest buy-in from this cohort, demonstrating crucial rapport with services where clients [...]

Drumming on the G20, diversity and Islamophobia

Tonight on #TheDrum, with host John Baron, we discussed the G20, cultural & diversity targets in workplaces and the findings of the 'Islamophobia in Australia Report' launched today.  My co-panellists included Marius Benson (ABC radio), Lisa Annese (DiversityCouncil) & Greg Sheridan (The Australian). Some damning statistics from get reputation confirmed what many of us know, available now in documented proof that Islamophobia is real, all pervasive and rising.
